Causes/Risk Factors

A
  1. Demyelination of axons in the ganglion, root, and nerve
  2. Swollen blood vessels or tumor
  3. More common in women between 5th and 6th decade of life
  4. Multiple Sclerosis

Manifestations

A
  1. Pain that ends as abruptly as it starts and is described as a unilateral shooting and stabbing sensation
  2. Associated involuntary contraction of the facial muscles can cause sudden closing of the eye or a twitch of the mouth
