Result from the formation of new, abnormal spongy bone, especially around the oval window
More common in women
With familial disposition

Otosclerosis: Signs and Symptoms
- Progressive hearing loss
- Ringing or buzzing in the ear
- Own voice sounds unusually loud
- Inability to hear whisper or somebody talking at a distance
- Can hear fairly well on telephone and in noisy environment
Otosclerosis: Management
- Well fitting hearing aid
- Stapedectomy

Removing of the stapes and part of footplates and inserting a tissue graft and suitable prosthesis

Otosclerosis: Post-op care
- Antimotion medication and sedatives for vertigo, nystagmus, or nausea
- Assist pt in ambulation
- Pain medication
- Observe for:
- Ear pain
- Fever
- Headache
- Vertigo

Patient Education
Advise pt that there may be temporary hearing loss for a few weeks after surgery d/t tissue edema and packing
Packing to be removed by the surgeon in 5-6 days post-op
Protect ear by placing cotton ball n outer ear and changing it BID
Instruct pt to
1. Avoid sudden pressure changes in the ear
- Do not:
- blow nose
- wet head for about 6 weeks
- Avoid sudden head movements
- Avoid flying for several weeks
- Stay away from people with URTI
- Do not smoke
- Protect ear when going outdoors for the first week
- Advise pt to report s/s of complications:
- Return of tinnitus
- Vertigo
- Fluctuation of hearing ability
