A rare but serious condition that causes swelling in the liver and brain
Reye’s Syndrome
It can occur at any age but usually affects children and teenagers after a viral infection, most commonly the flu or chickenpox

Laboratory evidence of liver dysfunction, lethargic, sleepy
Stage 1
Reye’s Syndrome Clinical Staging System
Deeply lethargic, combative, hyperventilation, hyperreflexia
Stage 2

Obtunded or in a light coma, decorticate rigidity
Stage 3
Reye’s Syndrome Clinical Staging System
Deepening coma, seizure, decerebrate rigidity, loss of oculovestibular reflexes, fixed pupils
Stage 4
Reye’s Syndrome Clinical Staging System
Seizures, deep coma, flaccid paralysis, absent deep tendon reflexes, respiratory arrest, fixed dilated pupils

The use of aspirin during a viral illness has the most commonly link to Reye’s Syndrome (adult)
