Triangles of the Neck Flashcards
Label
- Pre vertebral Fascia
- Platsyma
- Pre-tracheal fascia
- Investing Layer
- Sternocleidomastoid
- Carotid Sheath
Platsyma
Very thin layer and quite adherent to skin
Sternocleidomastoid and attachments
Origin: Sternum (Manubrium) & Clavicle
Insertion: Mastoid Process of the temporal bone
Innervation of Sternocleidomastoid
Accessory Nerve (CN XI)
Relationship of Sternocleidomastoid with rest of neck muscle triangles
Divides anterior and posterior triangles
Function of sternocleidomastoid
Flexion of cervical vertibrae, lateral flexion with rotation, extension of head at atalanto-occipital joints
Trapezius Muscle
Innervation of trapezius
Accessory Nerve (CN XI)
Relationship of trapezius with rest of neck muscle triangles
Posterior border of posterior triangle
Posterior triangles of the neck
Occipital Triangle
Omoclavicular/Subclavian Triangle
Anterior and posterior border of posterior triangle of the neck
Anterior: Sternocleidomastoid
Posterior: Trapezius Muscle
What divides the two posterior triangles
Inferior belly of the omohyoid
What muscles make the floor of the posterior triangle of the neck
Levator Scapulae
Elevates scapula
Makes the floor of the posterior triangle
**Not essential to be aware of this one tbh
Name the scalene muscles and palpate their locations
What forms the Superior, Lateral and Medial borders pf the Anterior Triangle of the Neck
Superior Border: Mandible
Lateral Border: Sternocleidomastoid
Medial Border: Midline
What triangle of the neck does the External Jugular Vein enter
Posterior Triangle (Omoclavicular)
What anatomical landmarks are structurally significant when inserting a central venous catheter in the neck/chest region?
Sternocleidomastoid
Sternum
Clavicle
Anterior Triangles of the Neck
Submental
Submandibular
Muscular
Carotid
What muscles make up the Carotid triangle of the neck
Sternocleidomastoid Muscle
Posterior Belly of Digastric Muscle
Omohyoid Superior Belly
Components of Carotid Triangle
Muscles
Carotid Sheath
Components of Carotid Triangle
Muscles
Carotid Sheath
Carotid Sheath Components
Common Carotid Artery
Internal Jugular Vein
Vagus Nerve
Submandibular Triangle Boundaries
Mandible
Anterior Belly of Digastric
Posterior Belly of Digastric
Components of Submandibular Triangle
Lymph Nodes/Salivary Gland Submandibular Gland Hypoglossal Nerve - Helps you move your tongue (CN XII) Vagus Nerve External & Internal Carotid Artery Internal Jugular Vein (Carotid Sheath) Muscles
Submental Triangle Boundaries
Hyoid Bone
Anterior Bellies of Digastric Left and Right
Components of Submental Triangle
Mylohyoid Muscle
Facial Artery/Vein
Submental Lymph Nodes
- Drains tongue/mouth
Muscular Triangle Boundaries
Midline
Omohyoid Anterior Belly
Sternocleidomastoid
Components of Muscular Triangle of the Neck
Infrahyoid Muscles
Where do the omohyoid heads originate/insert
Inferior belly: superior border of scapula near the suprascapular notch –> Intermediate Tendon
Superior belly: Intermediate Tendon –> Body of Hyoid
Discuss the lymphatic drainage of the submental & submandibular triangles of the neck
These are our superficial nodes that drain into the deep nodes that drain into the venous system
What muscle is superior to the neck lymphatics/Lymph nodes
Sternocleidomastoid
Discuss lymphatic drainage into venous system
Both legs, abdomen and left arm are drained through thoracic duct which enters venous system between the L subclavian & L internal jugular veins
Right arm, right thorax and right head drain into same location on the right
Pancoast Tumour
Tumours that start in apex of lung
Usually spreads into/compresses one or more structures of upper thorax/neck
**RIGHT SIDE OF PICTURE
Where might a pancoast tumour spread
- the upper ribs in the thorax
- nerves in the upper thorax and neck
- bundles of nerves close to the spinal cord
- blood vessels that supply blood to the upper limb
