Radiology of the Limbs Flashcards
Differentiate between an AP, Oblique and Lateral Hand X-ray
What Imaging modality is done in cases of trauma
X-Ray
Diaphysis
Shaft of a bone
Metaphysis
Wide portions of long bone either side of diaphysis - where bone growth occurs
Epiphysis
Rounded ends of long bones - contributes to joint surface
Physis
Growth plate - ossified once individual is skeletally mature
Apophysis
Site of tendenous insertion of a bone - eventually ossifies
Sesamoid
Bone which ossifies within a tendon
Is this a paediatric knee or adult knee and why
Paediatric - you can tell from the growth plate as the bone is not fully fused
Fancy Radiology words for base and head of a long bone
Base - Proximal Epiphysis
Head - Distal Epiphysis
**SAME LOGIC FOR NECK AND METAPHYSIS
Cortex (Bone)
Formed of dense compact bone hence white appearance on X-Ray
Outermost layer is periosteum and innermost is endosteum
**YELLOW IS PERIOSTEUM, BLUE IS ENDO
Medulla (Bone)
Central cavity containing bone marrow
Composed of fat hense less dense compared to cortical bone
What does this X-Ray Show and what are the numbers
Axial view of shoulder
2 - Distal Clavicle 4 - Acromion 5 - Coracoid Process 7 - Glenoid 8 - Humeral Head 14 - Humeral Shaft
Which number is the olecranon
3 bevause i think it is posterior to the trochlea (7)
Capitellum
Capitulum
What are the three lines on a lateral bent x-ray view of an elbow
Which Carpal bone can be seen in an x-ray of a medial to lateral lateral hand x-ray dipping above the ulna
Lunate (2)
Which Carpal bone can be seen in an x-ray of a medial to lateral lateral hand x-ray dipping anteriorly to the hand
Pisiform (4)
Name no. 1/2, 5/6, & 7
Locate the Tarsal Bones
6/7: Talus 8/9: Calcaneus 10: Navicular 11: Cuboid 12: Cuneiforms
1: Talus
2: Navicular
3: Calcaneus
4: Cuboid
5/6/7: Cuneiforms
Description of an X-Ray Fracture
Location Morphology Displacement Angulation Joint Involvement
Morphology of a Fracture
Be vaguely aware
What does this X-Ray show
Extra-Articular fracture on femoral neck
**DISRUPTED SHENTON’S LINE
What does this X-Ray show
Fracture as there are sail signs indicated by swollen fat pads
