Transport (2.3) Flashcards
Give a definition of osmosis
The movement of water from a high water potential to a low water potential
Under what conditions would water move into a cell via osmosis?
If the water concentration is higher outside the cell than the inside, then water will move via osmosis into the cell
Under what conditions would water move out of a cell via osmosis?
If the water concentration is lower outside the cell than inside, the water will move via osmosis to the lower concentration outside the cell
Explain why plant cells store glucose in the form of amylose/amylopectin and animal cells store glucose in the form of glycogen
Glycogen has ends that can be liberated in order to give glucose to provide energy for animals, in order to maintain metabolic rate.
Amylose and amylopectin i
Explain how and why the hydrolysis of amylopectin/glycogen stored in a cell would impact the movement of water via osmosis
Hydrolysis will increase the movement of water via osmosis because there is a greater number of solutes as the molecules are being broken into single monomers. The water will move into the cell.
