Respiration (7.3) Flashcards
Balanced symbol equation for respiration
6O2 + C6H12O6 ———> 6CO2 + 6H2O + (38) ATP
In respiration there are two ways ATP can be produced via phosphorylation: substrate level and oxidative
SUBSTRATE - involves the phosphorylation of ADP to ATP without the involvement of the mitochondrial ETC and ATP synthase
OXIDATIVE - generation of ATP via the breakdown of glucose and other fuels
Give the adaptations of the mitochondria for enabling respiration
Mitochondria have a double membrane structure, with an inner layer with many folds to create a high surface area. This provides more space for more metabolising proteins and therefor they are able to create more energy at one time. They also have a small amount of mitochondrial DNA, allowing them to create mitochondrial proteins quicker than from nucleic genes.
