(7.11 & 7.12) Flashcards
Define the term negative feedback
A biological response which returns reactions and conditions within the body to optimal conditions or equilibrium
Define the term positive feedback
A reaction where the products of this reaction cause an increase in intensity of the reaction that has just occurred
Define the term homeostasis
A state of balance within all the body’s systems which are needed for optimal survival and functioning
Explain how temperature changes are detected
Changes in temperature are detected via thermoreceptors located in the hypothalamus and under the skin
Explain the corrective mechanisms that are activated to lower body temperature
Sweat is produced from the sweat glands. Sweat lowers body temperature by making the body use heat produced to break hydrogen bonds in order for sweat to evaporate
As well as this, vasodilation occurs directing more blood towards the surface of the skin
