Cholesterol (1.15) Flashcards
Describe HDL
These are high-density lipoproteins, which contain a high protein to cholesterol ratio. High unsaturated fat diets raise this type of cholesterol and it’s function it to remove LDL taking it to the liver for it to be broken down
Explain how HDLs reduce the risk of CVD
HDLs reduce the risk of developing CVD by removing LDL from the bloodstream. This is good because without it excess LDL and other materials would build a fatty plaque (atherosclerosis) narrowing arteries increasing blood pressure and risk of CVD
Describe LDL
These are low-density proteins, which contain a high cholesterol to protein ratio. Saturated fats form these lipoproteins and they transport cholesterol to the receptors of body cells and tissue allowing plaques to develop.
Explain how LDLs increase the risk of CVD
Having excess amounts of this lipoprotein in the bloodstream results in increased blood cholesterol levels. This LDL cholesterol may be deposited in the artery walls forming atheromas, narrowing the vessel causing a higher blood pressure
