2
Q

Explain the role of oxygen in the electron transport chain

A

Oxygen is the terminal electron acceptor. Here it reacts with the electrons and H+ ions to produce water

Q

Describe the process of the electron transport chain

A

NADH and FADH deliver H ions and electrons
Electrons pass through ETC and H ions pumped into inter membrane
Electrochemical gradient produced so H ions move through ATP synthase via chemiosmosis producing energy
Energy causes oxidative phosphorylation (ADP + Pi = ATP)

Q

Describe the role of reduced NAD and reduced FAD in the electron transport chain

A

both coenzymes are oxidized and deliver H ions and electrons for the electron transport chain. They are then reused in the link reaction and kreb’s cycle to become reduced again

Q

State the term that describes how ATP is synthesized at the electron transport chain

A

Oxidative phosphorylation. ATP synthase uses H+ ions to catalyze the conversion of ADP + Pi into ATP
