TRANSPIRATION Flashcards
Explain the process of transpiration
- )The xylem transports water to the leaves,
- )these water molecules evaporate from the Mesophyll cells
- )which then enter the air spaces
- )When it enters the air spaces it turns into water vapour
- )The vapour then diffuses out of the Stomata down a concentration gradient
Where is the site of photosynthesis?
Chloroplast, mostly found in the Mesophyll cells
Brief summary of the transpiration stream
Transpiration causes water TO BE ‘pulled up’ the xylem IN the stem AND roots in a continuous cycle
Describe 4 functions of the transpiration stream
- Supplies water for photosynthesis
- carries mineral ions dissolved in water
- provides water to keep plant cells turgid
- Allows evaporation from the leaf surface, cooling the leaf down (kinda like sweating)
Name 4 factors that effect the rate of transpiration
Humidity, wind, light intensity, temperature
How does light intensity affect the rate of transpiration?
- -)As light intensity increases
- -)More stomata open
- -)wider stomata
- -) faster diffusion of water vapour out the leaf
How does temperature affect the rate of transpiration?
- -)higher the temp is
- -)the faster molecules move=more kinetic energy
- -)evaporation and diffusion, osmosis happens faster
How does wind affect the rate of transpiration?
- -)Wind blows WATER VAPOUR away from the stomata
- -)keeping the concentration gradient high
How does humidity affect the rate of transpiration?
Humidity=measure of how much water vapour is in the air
- )increased humidity -) more water vapour in the air
- )Lower concentration gradient between the inside and outside of the leaf
- )Rate of transpiration slooowss
