Q

Explain the process of transpiration

A
  • )The xylem transports water to the leaves,
  • )these water molecules evaporate from the Mesophyll cells
  • )which then enter the air spaces
  • )When it enters the air spaces it turns into water vapour
  • )The vapour then diffuses out of the Stomata down a concentration gradient

Q

Brief summary of the transpiration stream

A

Transpiration causes water TO BE ‘pulled up’ the xylem IN the stem AND roots in a continuous cycle

Q

Describe 4 functions of the transpiration stream

A
  • Supplies water for photosynthesis
  • carries mineral ions dissolved in water
  • provides water to keep plant cells turgid
  • Allows evaporation from the leaf surface, cooling the leaf down (kinda like sweating)

6
Q

How does light intensity affect the rate of transpiration?

A
  • -)As light intensity increases
  • -)More stomata open
  • -)wider stomata
  • -) faster diffusion of water vapour out the leaf

Q

How does temperature affect the rate of transpiration?

A
  • -)higher the temp is
  • -)the faster molecules move=more kinetic energy
  • -)evaporation and diffusion, osmosis happens faster

Q

How does wind affect the rate of transpiration?

A
  • -)Wind blows WATER VAPOUR away from the stomata

- -)keeping the concentration gradient high

Q

How does humidity affect the rate of transpiration?

A

Humidity=measure of how much water vapour is in the air

  • )increased humidity -) more water vapour in the air
  • )Lower concentration gradient between the inside and outside of the leaf
  • )Rate of transpiration slooowss
