THE MAMMALIAN HEART (EXERCISE) Flashcards
What happens during exercise?
The muscles are contracting more and are in need of more energy=
so need to respire more=and so need (more 02 and glucose) and produce more waste (C02)
What do the body do to respond to this demand of 02 and glucose?
The heart contracts more increasing the heart rate(increasing the BPM)
What else does the body do to respond to this demand of 02 and glucose?
The heart contracts more FORCEFULLYincreasing the volume of blood pumped in each beat(stock volume increases)
How can changes in the heart rate be measured?
By measuring the pulse rate (beats per minute) at the wrist/side of the neck?
What blood vessel can we feel a pulse?
Arteries .carry blood at high pressure away from the heart.
The blood being pushed along by each heart beat is the pulse
How is the HB after you stop doing exercise?
It turns to its normal resting rate after a few minutes
Why does the HB return to normal after exersise?
To continue to supply o2 to the muscle cells to repay the oxygen debt built up during exercise if the muscles respired anaerobically and produced lactic acid
Why is oxygen need after exercise?
to combine with the lactic acid (a toxic substance) and break it down into carbon dioxide and water
