THE COMPOSITION OF BLOOD;DEFICIENCIES/ADVANTAGES Flashcards
Why would an a person living at high altitudes have a higher red blood cell count?
At high altitudes to compensate for the decrease in oxygen= one of the bodies HORMONES triggers=
the production of MORE RBC’S = to aid in oxygen delivery to the muscles
What effects does living at high altitudes with more RBC have?
Person able to get sufficient amount of 02 to there organs,so can function normally
However someone who has not ACCLIMATISED may feel out of breath
Would an athlete who has used the illegal practice ‘blood doping’ have more or less red blood cells?
Higher that normal RBC count
What is blood doping?
Taking blood from themselves–)storing it for several weeks—)putting it back into their blood stream
Why would this practice be illegal?what are the advantages?
MORE RBC=ABLE TO TRANSPORT O2
What is the effects of blood doping?
MORE RBC=better oxygen transportation to the cells=higher rate of aerobic respiration(energy)=maximising performance in events=without suffering from lactic acid production
What is needed to make haemglobin?
Iron
Where is haemoglobin found?
Red blood cells
What does iron deficiency cause?
Anaemia
What is iron deficiency?
Iron deficiency is a type of anaemia so (iron deficiency anaemia is a condition)
What is iron deficiency anaemia?
A condition where the body, lacks iron in its RBC= resulting in less 02 being transported to the cells
What are the effects of iron deficiency anaemia?
Symptoms like: tiredness, lack of energy, shortness of breath, pale skin
