THE MAMMALIAN HEART Flashcards
How much chambers does the heart have?
4 chambers
Name all the chambers of the heart?
RA,RV,LA,LV
What does the right side of the heart do?
Receives deoxygenated blood then pumps it to the lungs
What does the left side of the heart do?
Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs then pumps it to the body
What does the RA of the heart do?
The RA receives deoxygenated blood from the body through the VENA CAVA
Vena cava
Pumps DEoxygenated blood from the body into the RA
What does the RV of the heart do?
The DEoxygenated blood moves from the RA into the RV which then pumps blood to the lungs through the PULMONARY ARTERY
What happens in the LA of the heart?
The LA of the heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs through the PULMONARY VEIN
What happens in the LV?
Blood moves from the LA into the LV which pumps blood to the the whole body through the AORTA
What does the RA, RV stand for?
Right and left atrium
What is the largest vein in the human body?
Vena cava
What is the largest artery in the human body?
Aorta
What word is always related or in reference to the lungs?
PULMONARY
What blood vessel pumps blood to the lungs?
PULMONARY ARTERY
What blood vessel pumps blood from the lungs to the LA?
PULMONARY VEIN
Does the atria or the ventricles have thick walls?
The ventricles have thicker walls than the atria
Why do the ventricles have thicker walls than the atria ?
They pump blood further and out of the heart, to the organs =so they need muscles to withstand the high pressure =of the blood moving towards the body
Does the RV or the LV have thick muscles?
The LV have thicker muscles than the RV
Why does the LV have thicker muscles than the RV?
Because the LV has to pump blood around the WHOLE body at HIGH PRESSURE,to all of the organs/tissue wheras the RV only has to pump to the lungs which is close to the heart
What is the role of the valves?
Prevent back-flow of blood into the heart
What valve is in the left side of the heart?
The biscuspid valve sitting between the left atrium and the left ventricle.
What valves are in the right side of the heart?
The tricuspid valve
Where in the heart is the tricuspid valve situated?
Between the RA and RV of the heart
Where is the semi lunar valve on the right side of the heart located?
Between the pulmonary artery and the right ventricle.
Where is the semi lunar valve on the left side of the heart located?
Between the aorta and the left ventricle,
