GAS EXCHANGE IN PLANTS (3) STOMATA(GUARD CELLS) Flashcards
Where is the stomata located?
lower epidermis of leaves
What are stomata surrounded by?what do they do?
- -) pair of guard cells that control the opening and closing of the stomata
- -)depending on how turgid or flaccid they are
What happens to the guard cells when the stomata is open?
photosynthesises and makes glucose
What happens to the water concentration in the guard cells when it photosynthesises?
Water concentrations will lower and therefore the cells will absorb more water by osmosis and become turgid
What happens to the guard cells when they are turgid?
Thin outer walls will curve
thicc inner walls
What happens to the guard cells when the stomata closes?
- )will NOT photosynthesises
- )glucose used up and stored as starch
- )thin outer walls will straighten
What happens to the guard cells water concentration when the stomata closes?
increases, and therefore looses water by osmosis and become flaccid
Does gas exchange happen when the stomata is closed or open
open
