BIOLOGICAL MOLECULES (Carbohydrates) Flashcards
What chemical elements does carbohydrates have?
C, O,H
What chemical elements does Lipids have?
C, O(lower), H
What chemical elements does protein have?
C,O,H,N+(some sulfur)
What are the basic units of all carbohydrates? Can you name some?
(simple sugars) e.g glucose and fructose(fruit sugar)
What is glucose?
A monosaccharide (simple sugar)
What is formed when 2 glucose molecules join together?
maltose (1 glucose+glucose)
and
sucrose (2 glucose+fructose)
BOTH DISSACCHARIDE)
What is formed when lots (chains) of glucose molecules join together?
Starch (in plants) (storage carb) e.g wheat’s)
Glycogen(animal cell) (when humans want to store carbohydrates)
What percentage of mass does carbohydrates make up in the body?
1%
What is the role of carbohydrates?
supplies cells with energy–) cells release this energy from a type of carbohydrate called glucose via cell respiration
What is cellulose(plant cell wall)?what is its role?
is a carbohydrate and polymer of glucose,
can’t digest it used as a dietary fibre
What is a polymer?
a long and repeating chain of the same molecule stuck together.
Where do we get the majority of our carbohydrates?
we get the majority of our carbohydrates in the FORM of starch from vegetables, rice and grains
what are all carbohydrates converted into?
converted to glucose and absorbed into the blood
What carbs can dissolve
Glucose, lactose and sucrose(sugars), are found in sweet foods and dissolves in water
