THE ADAPTATIONS OF THE MAMMALIAN HEART Flashcards
What is 1 adaption of the heart?explain its funcion
Valves prevent back flow of blood in the heart
What are the walls of the heart made of?Why is this a useful adaptation?
Cardiac muscle can contract and then relax continuously without tiring
Explain another adaptation of the heart
The cardiac muscle has its own blood supply called coronary circulation
What is coronary circulation?
Blood reaches the cardiac muscle via coronary arteries which carry blood to capillaries that supply the heart muscle with O2 and nutrients then blood is returned to the RA via the coronary veins
Explain one more adaptation of the heart
the heart is divided into a left side and a right side by a septum
Why would it be useful for the heart to separate its blood into oxygenated and deoxygenates
To maintain a high concentration gradient so the blood can exchange nutrients
What are the only arteries in the body that have valves
Pulmonary artery and the aorta
Why are valves important?
Prevent back flow of blood making sure it flows in the right direction
What is the sound of the heart beat?
The sound of the valves closing
Why does the heart need more dissolved glucose and oxygen?
It needs to respire
What do the cardiac veins do?
take away the waste products of respiration produced by the heart
Why is it odd that the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood
Veins usually carry deoxygenated blood from the body back into the heart (e.g vena cava) BUT the pulmonary vein uniquely carriers oxygenated blood instead into the heart (LA)
Why is it odd that the pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood
Arteries usually carry oxygenated blood e.g (aorta pumps to the body) BUT the pulmonary arteries uniquely pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
Veins
blood towards the heart
Arteries
leave the heart
