THE COMPOSITION OF BLOOD;VACCINES(3) Flashcards
1
Q
What are vaccines?
A
Artificial immunity against a disease without contracting the disease
2
Q
How do vaccinations work?
A
- Harmless (dead or altered) form of the pathogen , injected into the body
- Pathogens are weakened=cannot cause illness but provoke an immune response
- Lymphocytes produce specific antibodies that target and attach onto the antigen to make memory cells
- The memory cells=remains in the blood=will quickly respond to the antigen if encountered again in an infection
- As memory cells have been produced this immunity is long lasting
3
Q
Give 1 example of a type of vaccination
A
A WEAKENED STRAIN of the actual microbe e.g (vaccines against polio)
4
Q
Give a 2nd example of a type of vaccination
A
dead microbes=typhoid
5
Q
Give 3rd example of a type of vaccination
A
Just the antigens themselves=influenza vaccines
