Translation Flashcards
Where does translation take place in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes?
At the ribosomes in the cytoplasm
In summary, what happens in translation?
Amino acids are joined together to make a polypeptide chain, following the sequence of codons carried by the mRNA
What does mRNA attach itself to?
Ribosome
What does tRNA do?
Carry amino acids to the ribosome where the mRNA is
What does ATP do?
Provide energy needed for the bond between the amino acid and the tRNA molecule to form
What is the anticodon on the tRNA molecule complimentary to? What does it do?
The codon on the mRNA molecule
Attaches itself by complimentary base pairing
What do the amino acids next to each other do?
They join by a peptide bond
What happens to the tRNA molecule once the amino acids have bonded to each other?
It moves away, leaving the amino acid molecule in its place
How long does the translation reaction occur?
until a stop signal is reached
What is produced from the amino acids bonded to each other?
Polypeptide chain (protein) which codes for the original protein which was transcribed
