Transcription Flashcards
Where does transcription take place in eukaryotic cells?
In the nucleus
Where does transcription take place in prokaryotic cells?
In the cytoplasm
What is the role of helicase?
Break the hydrogen bonds between the double strands of DNA, unwinding the strands to produce one used as a template for transcription
What is the role of RNA polymerase?
Attaches to the DNA at the start of the gene.
Adds free complimentary RNA nucleotides to the exposed bases on the template DNA strand.
Specific base pairing
What nucleotides does RNA polymerase line up with the template strand?
A - U
C - G
G - C
T - A
What does RNA polymerase produce?
A complimentary copy of the DNA template strand but thymine is replaced by uracil
When does RNA polymerase stop moving along the template strand?
When it reaches a stop codon
Where does the strand of mRNA go after it is made in eukaryotic cells?
Out of the nucleus through the nuclear pore into the cytoplasm
What does the pre-mRNA of eukaryotes contain?
Introns and exons
What has to be done to pre-mRNA to produce mRNA?
The introns (non-coding) need to be removed by splicing
Why is there no splicing in prokaryotes?
They dont have introns
