Mutations Flashcards
What is a gene mutation?
Change in the DNA base sequence of a chromosome
What happens if the order of bases is changed?
The sequence of amino acids in the gene may be changed
What does degenerate mean?
Some amino acids are coded for by more than one DNA triplet
What mutation wont always cause an effect? Why?
Substitution
Degenerate nature of the genetic code
What mutation will always cause an effect? Why?
Deletion
Shifts all bases right of the mutation left
What is a mutagenic agent?
Increase the rate of mutations
What are examples of mutagenic agents?
UV light
ionising radiation
some chemicals
some viruses
When do mutations occur?
Spontaneously
What is chromosome non-disjunction?
The failure of chromosomes to separate properly, causing extra copies in some cells and not enough in others
What causes chromosome mutations?
errors during meiosis
What is a chromosome mutation?
Cells produced contain variations in number of chromosomes or parts of chromosomes
