training principles Flashcards
what are the different training principles
- specificity
- progressive overload
- training thresholds
- individual differences
- reversibility
what are the factors influencing progressive overload
- intensity
- frequency
- duration
what is specificity
It is the principle that implies that different forms of exercise produce different effects.
‘what you train for is what you get’
what is progressive overload?
The principle is fundamental and essential for improving physiological capabilities. The body must be continually loaded with progressively higher work levels.
what is intensity
Training intensity refers to how hard a person must work each session. To improve fitness vigorous exercise utilising large muscle groups is required
what is frequency
Frequency refers to the number of training sessions per week. Training improvements are the summation of the body adaptation resulting from regular exercise.
what is duration
Duration refers to the length of the training session. Duration of exercise must directly relate to the intensity of the activity.
what are training thresholds
Refers to the minimum intensity and duration of stress that must be exceeded before adaptation in physiological capabilities are triggered
what are individual differences
All individuals have genetic factors including heart size, muscle mass and fibre type composition that can affect a person’s response to training
what is reversibility
If training is stopped or done at an insufficient intensity then the adaptations made by the body in response to training will be reversed.
