Topic 8 - Energy Transfer and Food Webs Flashcards
how is energy transferred along a food chain?
energy from the sun is the source of energy for nearly all life. plants use this energy to make food in photosynthesis. this energy makes its way through the food chain, although around 90% is lost when passing onto the next trophic level.
how is energy lost along a food chain?
some parts of food aren’t eaten or are indigestible, so energy from them isn’t taken in
organisms use energy to stay alive
energy is transferred to the surroundings by heat
what is the useful energy in a food chain?
energy used in becoming biomass
what do food webs show?
how different food chains are linked
what happens if one species in a food web changes?
every other species is affected as the species are interdependent
