Q

what does the cornea do?

A

refracts light into the eye. its transparent and has no blood vessels to supply it with oxygen so oxygen diffuses in from the outer surface.

Q

what happens in the eye when looking at distant objects?

A
  1. ciliary muscles relax, which allows the suspensory ligaments to pull tight
  2. this makes the lens thin
  3. so the lens refracts less light

Q

what happens in the eye when looking at near objects?

A
  1. ciliary muscles contract, which allows the suspensory ligaments to slack
  2. this makes the lens fat - more curved
  3. so the lens refracts more light

Q

why might people be short-sighted?

A

their cornea/lens bends the light too much or the eyeball is too long. the images are brought into focus in front of the retina

Q

why might people be long-sighted?

A

their cornea/lens doesn’t bend the light enough or the eyeball is too short. the images are brought into focus behind the retina
