Topic 5 - Circulation Flashcards
what do arteries carry?
oxygenated blood
what do veins carry?
deoxygenated blood
what are the exceptions to the rule (arteries carry oxygenated, veins carry deoxygenated)?
the pulmonary artery and vein
what does pulmonary mean?
to do with the lungs
what does hepatic mean?
to do with the liver
what does renal mean?
to do with the kidneys
what carries blood from the lungs to the heart?
pulmonary vein
what carries blood from the heart to the brain?
aorta
what carries blood from the heart to the liver?
the aorta, then the hepatic artery
what carries blood from the gut to the liver?
the hepatic portal vein
what carries blood from the heart to the gut?
the aorta
what carries blood from the heart to the kidneys?
the aorta then the renal artery
what carries blood from the heart to the lungs?
pulmonary artery
what carries blood from the brain to the heart?
vena cava
what carries blood from the liver to the heart?
the hepatic vein, then the vena cava
what carries blood from the kidneys to the heart?
the renal vein then the vena cava
what is coronary heart disease (CHD)
when coronary arteries that supply the blood to the heart muscle get blocked by layers of fatty material building up. this causes arteries to become narrow, so blood flow is restricted and there’s a lack of oxygen going to the heart muscle
what are the risk factors for CHD?
- a diet high in saturated fat - can lead to fatty deposits forming in arteries
- smoking
- being inactive - can lead to high blood pressure, damaging artery lining.
