Topic 2 - Energy From Food (Paper 2) Flashcards
1
Q
what is calorimetry?
A
burning food to see how much enery it contains
2
Q
how would you carry out calorimetry?
A
- get a dry food
- weigh a small amount of the food and skewer on a mounted needle
- add a set volume of water to a boiling tube held with a clamp
- measure the temp of the water and set fire to the food using a bunsen burner
- hold the food under the boiling tube until it wont relight
- measure the temp of the water again
3
Q
how do you calculate the energy in food?
A
energy in food = mass of water x temp change of water x 4.2
4
Q
how do you calculate energy per gram of food?
A
energy per gram of food = energy in food / mass of food
5
Q
how would you increase the accuracy of a calorimitry experiment?
A
insulate the boiling tube to minimise heat loss
keep the bunsen burner away so the tube isnt heated more
