Topic 8 - Air Pollution Flashcards
what happens when fossil fuels are burnt without enough air supply?
carbon monoxide is produced
what is carbon monoxide mostly released by?
car emissions from cars without catalytic converters (which convert carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide)
how is sulfur dioxide released?
by burning fossil fuels with sulfur impurities
how does sulfur dioxide form acid rain?
the gas mixes with rain clouds to form dilute sulfuric acid, which falls as acid rain
what are the main causes of acid rain?
internal combustion engines in cars and power stations
what damage does acid rain cause?
acid rain can cause a lake to become more acidic, effecting the lakes ecosystem
acid rain can kill trees, by damaging leaves and releasing toxic substances from the soil
