Topic 1 - Levels Of Organisation Flashcards
what is the difference between eukaryotic and prokaryotic?
eukaryotic cells are complex and include all animal and plant cells
prokaryotic cells are smaller and simpler, for example, bacteria
what are organelles?
tiny structures within cells
what organelles are typically found in an animal cell?
nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria and ribosome
what is the function of the nucleus?
contains genetic material that controls the cell’s activities. It’s surrounded by its own membrane.
what is the function of the cell membrane?
a semipermeable membrane that controls the substances that go in and out
what is the function of the cytoplasm?
gel-like substance that contains enzymes that control most of the cell’s chemical reactions
what is the function of the mitochondria?
aerobic respiration, giving the cell energy
what is the function of the ribosomes?
protein synthesis
what organelles are typically found in a plant cell (not including those found in an animal cell)?
chloroplasts, cell wall, and a vacuole
what is the function of the chloroplasts?
contains chlorophyll, which is used in photosynthesis, making food for the plant
what is the function of the cell wall?
a rigid structure made of cellulose which supports the cell and strengthens it
what is the function of the vacuole?
a large organelle containing cell sap (weak solution of sugars and salts)
what is a tissue?
a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function
what is an organ?
a group of different tissues that work together to perform a function
whats some examples of tissues?
xylem and phloem tissues
