TOPIC 5 NUTRIENTS CYCLE Flashcards
What are the organisms that are used in Nitrogen cycle and what is its function?
The organism that is used is Sapriobionts Microorganisms.
Function is to digest “food” externally and absorb products.
What is the adaptation in Sapriobiotic Organism in nitrogen cycle?
The Adaptation is Mycorrhizae which is a fungal associations between plants roots and fungi.
What is the relationship between plants roots and fungi?
Why is it an advantage?
The relationship between the plant roots and fungi is mutualistic.
Plant gives fungi carbohydrates.
Fungi gives plants water.
How is Mycorrhizae an adaptation?
Provides a large Surface Area for uptake of water and ions.
Acts like a sponge absorbs and hold water easily which is advantageous in extreme conditions.
Why is Nitrogen cycle so important?
Nitrogen cycle is important as Nitrogen needed to create DNA,RNA,AminoAcids and ATP
What are the 4 stages in Nitrogen Cycle?
1.Nitrogen-Fixation
2.Ammonification
3.Nitrification
4.Denitrification
Give the order of bacteria in the Nitrogen Cycle
1.Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria
2.Sapriobiotic Microorganisms
3.Nitrifying Bacteria
4.Anaerobic Denitrifying Bacteria
Where do Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria live?
Nitrogen-Fixing bacteria are either free living in the soil or mutualistic relationship with Leguminous plant because they live in Root Nodules
What is the first stage of Nitrogen Cycle and what occurs?
First stage is Nitrogen-Fixation.
Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria converts Atmospheric Nitrogen(N2) into ammonium Ions (NH4+)
What is the second stage in Nitrogen Cycle?
And what occurs?
The second stage is Ammonification.
Organic Nitrogen From decomposition of proteins(DNA,urea) converted into ammonium ions released into soil by Sapriobiotic microorganisms
What is the formula of Nitrates?
What is the formula of Nitrites?
Nitrates= NO3-
Nitrites=NO2-
What is the third stage in the Nitrogen Cycle?
What occurs?
Nitrification
Ammonium Ions in Soil oxidised to nitrites then to Nitrates by Nitrifying Bacteria
[NH4+ →NO2- →NO3-]
What is the final stage in nitrogen cycle?
What occurs?
The final stage is denitrification.
Converts nitrogen in COMPOUNDS back to Nitrogen Gas carried out by AnAerobic Denitrifying Bacteria.
What is an disadvantage of Denitrification?
Not as useful as Nitrogen Gas cannot be absorbed by plants.
