Q

What is the summary of Drews and Doig?

A

Investigated the effectiveness of using a new graphical display for assessing patient condition in an ICU.

The sample included 42 registered nurses, with a mean experience of 8.48 years.

Half the nurses used a standard numerical display, while half were asked to use a new configural vital signs display (CVS), which used graphs to show trends in vital signs for blood oxygen levels, heart rate and blood pressure. Nurses were given 4 patient scenarios and made judgements about the patient’s condition and what interventions they should make. The researchers measured the time taken to assess the patient and how accurate they were.

CVS led to higher accuracy and shorter response time compared to the control group for stable, pulmonary embolism and septic shock conditions. Nurses also reported lower mental demands when using the graphical CVS display.

Q

What is Brown and Poulton about?

A

ppts drove in either a residential area or in a car park while they were being played a tape containing lists of numbers. They had to identify what numbers changed from one sequence to the next

ppts made more erros in the shopping centre car park than the residential area. Ppts needed to give more attention to the stimuli associated with their primary task and therefore have less mental capacity to perform the secondary task.
