Topic 4 - Bioenergetics ( 7. aerobic respiration ) Flashcards
1
Q
Define respiration
A
the process of transferring energy from food molecules in every living cell
2
Q
Describe the process of aerobic respiration
A
- Glucose reacts with oxygen, producing carbon dioxide and water as waste products
- This takes place continuously in animals and plants
3
Q
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
A
glucose + oxygen => carbon dioxide + water + energy
4
Q
Respiration involves a series of what?
A
small reactions, each controlled by an enzyme
5
Q
Where do most of the reactions in respiration happen?
A
mitochondria
6
Q
What is the energy that is released during respiration used for?
A
- To build up larger molecules using smaller ones
- In animals, to enable muscles to contract
- In mammals and birds, to maintain a steady body temperature in colder surroundings
- In plants, to build up sugars, nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids which are then built up into proteins
