Topic 3 - Infection and response ( 1. communicable disease) Flashcards
what are pathogens
these are microorganisms that enter the body and cause disease. both plants and animals can be infected by pathogens.
what are bacteria
very small cells which can reproduce rapidly inside your body. they can make you feel ill by producing toxins that damage cells.
state the 3 ways pathogens can spread
direct contact, water, air
what is a virus
these are not cells. they are much smaller than bacteria. reproduce rapidly. they live inside of your cells and replicate themselves inside of the cell. the cell will eventually burst to release new viruses. cell damage is what makes you feel ill.
what are protists
lots of types of protists. but they’re all eukaryotes. and most are single-celled. some protists are parasites which live in or on organisms and can cause them damage. often transferred to the organism by a vector. e.g. an insect that carries the protist.
what are fungi
some are single-celled however some have a body made of hyphae. these can grow and penetrate human skin and the surface of plants. which cause diseases.
what are communicable diseases
diseases which can be spread.
