Topic 2a - Tissues, organs and organ systems ( 7. transpiration and translocation ) Flashcards
what are phloem tissues
made of columns of elongated living cells with small pores in the end walls to allow sap to flow through. cell sap is the liquid thats made up of the substances being transported.
they transport food made in the leaves to the rest of the plant for immediate use or for storage. transport goes in both directions leaves to roots, roots to leaves. process called translocation.
what are xylem tissues
made of dead cells with no end walls between them and a hole down the middle. they’re strengthened with a material called lignin.
carry water and mineral ions around the plant. movement of water through the xylem and out the leaves is called the transpiration stream.
what is the transpiration stream
the loss of water from a plant, the movement of water from the leaves to the plant
