Tonicity of IV Fluids Flashcards
Tonicity is ?
Why do you think about?
Concentration is always based on ?
Is the concentration of that IV solution .
Think about the number of particles that R in the IV solution
The concentration is always base on normal intracellular fluid
Isotonic
Tonicity or concentration of dissolved particles is equal to ICF(intracellular fluid)
Will see this very frequently. They are more commonly used because there is a variety of things they can be used for
4 Example of isotonic solutions
0.9% saline (NS)
Lactated ringer’s solution
5% dextrose in water (5%DW)
**also used as a hypotonic solution after it is administered because the body absorbs the dextrose BUT it is considered isotonic)
5% dextrose in 0.225% (D/1/4NS)
Describe isotonic fluids
Isotonic fluids are use for 5 patients who are
- )
- )
- )
- )
- )
Isotonic fluid is the same as the fluid inside of the cells
- )dehydrated,
- )shock,
- )fluid volume deficit,
- ) to increase blood pressure
- )to accompany blood administration
Hypotonic
Hypotonic fluid is less concentrated than the cell. This would cause water to move into the cell
What happens is water is drawn into the cells when a hypotonic solution is given
So the cells will swell up with fluid
Example : .45 %saline also called 1/2 normal saline
Never give hypotonic solution to patient that have
- )
- )
- )
Never give hypotonic solution to patient that have
- )liver disease,
- )burns or who have some sort of trauma because u don’t want those cells to swell up
3.)Never give you pt with increase ICP because u don’t want the cells in brain to swell up when there’s already increase pressure up there
Hypertonic
Hypertonic fluid is more concentrated then the cell. This will cause water to move out of the cell
So it actually drawn water out of the cells causing the cells to shrink
Hypertonic solution 4examples
5% dextrose in lactated ringer
5% dextrose in 0.45% Saline
5% dextrose in 0.9% saline
10% dextrose in water
Never give hypertonic fluids two patients that are dehydrated such as ___________
The tonicity Will you call the cells to ______ drying them out
Never give hypertonic fluids to patients that are dehydrated such as diabetic Ketoacidosis
The tonicity Will you call the cell to shrink . drying them out
Why should hypotonic fluids be closely monitored?
Because a rapid increase in fluid shifting into cell can call cellular and cerebral Edema.
What 3 reasons would you give a hypotonic fluid?
Dehydration,
hypernatremia, low blood pressure
Why would you give me a hypertonic fluid?
Hyponatremia, nutrition
Hypertonic fluid should be closely monitored because?
Because it causes electrolyte imbalance and dehydration
Before you start IV fluids assess clients?
IV, make sure is patent
If the IV is ever infiltrated what would you see?
Cool or warmth ,
swollen
tender
painful at the site
