Blockers Flashcards
Beta blockers action
They block ____
E=fight or flight
This is great with it with heart problems because we do not want their heart stimulated
Decrease BP, hr
Increased contractility ( pumping will be more effective )
The effects r the same in calcium channel blocker
Contraindication
Betsa blockers don’t give to asthmatics because some beta blockers work on the heart and lungs and that would not be great for patients with asthma
Or patients with diabetes because when a blood sugar drops the heart rate will go up to compensate
Calcium channel blocker’s action
They block calcium from getting into the cells.
Calcium has excitatory response on the body so if u blocked the calcium u have the effects of decrease pulse, bp and increase In heart contractility so it reduces the oxygen demands of the heart
Contraindications for calcium channel blocker
Grapefruit juice
Never give cholesterol drugs with grapefruit juice
Calcium channel blocker’s/beta blockers treat the same three things
Hypertension( high BP )
Angina (chest pain)
Arrhythmias(in regular heart rhythm)
Note* beta blockers will also treat glaucoma because they bring that pressure down
What to look for
When give blockers your patient may complain of headaches and hypotension
What do you check before you get any type of heart medicine

Hold the meds is pulse was less then 60 in adult
And no was so systolic no was less than 100
What drink should a person taking a dysrhythmic avoid?
A) Milk B) Pepsi C) Gatorade D) Pineapple Juice
B because we don’t want patience with heart problems to have any kind of caffeine
Beta blockers and calcium channel blocker’s focus on the ?
Cardiovascular system
