Theonomous ethics are the most successful Flashcards
What is the intro ?
ethics which are governed by Gods law or commands
What scholars will u use ?
Karl Barth, Augustine, St Paul
What is ur view ?
successful
what is the point in para 1 ?
Bible is very important because it is the word of god and therefore a scared source. It is constant and doesn’t change.
Also provides role models such as Paul and Jesus- contains 10 commandments which we can all agree with.
what is the counterargument in para 1 ?
Karl Barth- still gave high value to scripture but said literalism is dangerous
gives bible divine status - bibliotary
liberals- bible is inspire by God.- takes the importance away
how will you counteract the counterargument in para 1 ?
bible is the word of god - ‘The the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth ans said to me ‘I have put my words in your mouth’
writers of bible should not be seen as authors - but rather scribes or translators to what God has commanded or told.
What is the point in para 2 ?
we need explicit moral guidlines because St Paul and augustin ebelieved humans by their very nature are sinful and ignorant.
we should look for instructions on how to live.
what is the counterargument in para 2?
many contradictions
Old testament - war and retrubutive justice ‘An eye for an eye’
New Testament - love our enemies -‘But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you’
- also could be out of date + doesnt refelct society today. Also- things such as autonomous ethics are better - only moral guidign principle is love - because jesus is the root of all jesus teachings
how will you counteract the counterargument ?
autonomous is also not good because theres more to Jesus teaching than just love. therefroe too simplistic
also - humans are incapable to living good lives based on their own powers of reason as were sinful and ginorant, so need gods revelation
