A

peole who are suffering rn wont find it convincing
shcleiermacher also says that it is a logical error

Q

which scholars will u use in iraneus theodicy ?

A

iraneus , hick , swinburne, DZ Phillips , mackie

17
Q

what is the summary of iraneus theodicy ?

A

god created an imperfect world so that humans can grow into goodness. God is to blame for natural evil however our misuse of free will is what has caused moral evil

18
Q

what is the point in para 1 of iraneus ?

A

john hick - world is a ‘vale of soul making’ and that sufferign makes us be better people
we are firstly made in the image of god then we grow into the likeness of god . he als supports the notion of ‘acquired goodness’ , so we have earned goodnesss through effort.
also true to life

19
Q

what is the counterargument of para 1 iraneus ?

A

how is it moral for a god who is meant to care for us to use evil as a way to bring about good.
DZ Phillips - suffering of innocent children. ih he is omnipotent surely he could have created a better way for goodness to develop

20
Q

how will u counteract the counteragrument in para 1 iraneus ?

A

god is only repsonsible for natural evil

21
Q

what is the point in para 2 iraneus ?

A

theodicy takes and ends justifies the means approach because since evil and sufferign are instrumentally good, the amount of evil is justified by universal salvation for all

22
Q

what is the counterargument for para 2 iraneus ?

A

some instances of evil and the vast amount of evil cannot be justified this way (nazi holocaust )

23
Q

how will you counteract the counterargument in para 2 iraneus ?

A

even though a tragedy like this can never be justified is important to clarify that this may not have been the fault of Gods, and that tyrants such as Hitler, have misused their free will and disobeyed God.Therefore, Richard Swinburne also states that evil and suffering are the price that we have to pay for having free will , otherwise we would be Gods puppets .
