Q

What is point in para 1 essay 2

A

John Calvin - 16th century French theologian. Formed the idea of sensus divinitatis. We can experience this through conscience , beauty and intellectual ability.

Beauty of world = clear evidence of God.

Chapter 3 of Book I of Calvin’s Institutes ‘ That there exists in the human mind…some sense of deity’.

“Without the knowledge of the self there is no knowledge of God”

The world around us is like a mirror .

Sensus divinitatis can been see in 3 ways , one of which is conscience.

Conscience - feeling of guilt - voice inside of us that provides innate evidence that God exists.

Joseph Butler agrees - internally holds is to account , internal sense of God’s divine spark and reveals him.

What is the point in para 2 essay 2

A

Reason

Our intellectual ability sets us apart. Reason can help us reflect on what we see around us.

Normal for humans to use their brains for reason. Thomas Aquinas’ five ways. These help to define what kind of being God is.

‘Let us make mankind in our image’ -Catholics use the Latin term- Imago dei implies we have an innate desire to know God. - our openness to goodness and beauty which are all aspects of God.

RCC- ‘desire for God is written in the human’.

Q

What is the counter argument para 2 essay 2

A

how reason can lead humans in the wrong direction

Brunner - Sinful nature is so corrupted that our reason cannot point to God in nature in any sense.

Augustine - humans are sinful, relationship with God destroyed due to fall. Concupisence. We were all present in Adam’s loins so we all have orignial sin. So were more innately sinful than innately religious.

22
Q

What is the intro essay 3

A

Reason links to natural theology because that is gaining knowledge throigh the powers of human reason. Some also believe that we can find out more about God from revealed theology - God choosing to reveal himself to humans directly through religious experience and scripture.

23
Q

What is the point in para 1 essay 3

A

Natural theology is when the thinker tries to use reason and experience to understand God’s nature and existence. However, this is too flawed to just be used on its own.

Many people come up with different conclusions , including that God does not exist - so its too subjective.

Revealed theology is also needed to achieve true faith. Only God can properly reveal something as indescribable as himself. Understanding the Bible as a revealed text shows how God has left that revelation for all to have access to.

24
Q

What is the counter argument para 1 essay 3

A

  • argument from first cause
  • argument from contingency

Normal for humans to use their brains for reason

Long tradition which shows people using reason to prove God’s exist

He was witnessing rise of Nazism - which influenced his views on reason can lead people in the wrong direction.

40
Q

What is ur view essay 5

A

The fall has completely removed all natural knowledge of God

41
Q

What is the intro essay 5

A

Explain the fall

42
Q

Which scholars essay 5

A

Calvin, Barth, Augustine, Aquinas, Brunner , Cicero

43
Q

What is the point in para 1 essay 5

A

What actually happened and the relationship between God and humanity.

Augustine - Fall - placed an insurmountable barrier between God and Humanity. Orignial sin has prevented knowledge of God because we became corrupt in our will.

Due to this we all have a sinful nature, so without the help of God, we are never going to reach full knowledge of God. - Revealed theology is better (input strengths)

BARTH- Fall was destruction of human nature, which became corrupt. God reveals himself to us as and when he wants to (cant know by ourselves ).

44
Q

What is the counter argument for para 1 essay 5

A

Brunner - it did still damage relationship
ALL HOPE IS NOT LOST THO
We still have our spirituality which connects us to God is still there - there is still a line of communication (point of contact)

45
Q

How will you counteract the counter argument in para 1 essay 5

A

Barth -titled Nein - hated what Brunner said - no authoritative source of knowledge apart from God’creation
All NT is rejected as there is no such point of contact

46
Q

What is the point in para 2 essay 5

A

Reason and senses divinitatis
Calvin - Fall made it questioned if it’s possible for humans to use their senses in knowledge of God

47
Q

What is the counter argument para 2 essay 5

A

Aquinas - God gave us the ability to use our senses and reason to work out knowledge of God. - why would he do this if he knew the fall would happen (omniscient).

Brunner - Natural Theology only exists to promote deeper thought of revealed theology

Conscience, sensus divinitatis and the beauty of nature are points of contact with God - however if a person wants full knowledge of God - they need to accept their faith in Jesus - and seek redemption brought only by revelation.

Also, no dominantion believes Natural Theology is sufficient on its own anyways, you need a combo of natural and revelead for best understanding.

48
Q

How will you counteract the counter argument in para 2 essay 5

A

Human reason is inadequate
Refutes Cicero’s human consent argument -the fact that there are many different interpretat of God shows human reason is faulty
