ome believe that when we die we are not judged till the last day, when God will decide upon us where we will spend the afterlife. Some others believe that God will judge you as soon as you die.

Some others may argue that Christianity doesn’t actually give a clear answer so it is debated regularly.

A

Irenaeus - We don’t enter Heaven till final day of judgement where God’s plans come to an end. People wait in peaceful happiness while they wait for final reward. (Some exceptional people such as Saints and Martyrs may go to Heaven before us).

John Calvin- Dead are not sleeping while they wait, but are conscious , either in peaceful bliss or pain depending on what God has chose.

Q

how will you counterargue the counterargument in para 1 essay 2

A

How is it fair that people are ‘fast tracked’. In the eyes of God we are all equal. We were all made in the image of him . God is also just so why would he do this if his omnibenevolence was spread among us equally.

Calvin- doesn’t that mean that we have already been judged ? People will already know where they are gonna go depending on whether they are in pain or peace.

Q

what is the point in para 2 essay 2 ?

A

Lots of biblical support.

‘Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom’

‘Truly I tell you today you will be with me in paradise’- Criminal next to Jesus on the cross - would be going straight to Heaven.

Parable of Rich Man and Lazarus - seems to suggest that Lazarus was taken straight to Heaven after death.

Q

what s the counterargument in para 2 essay 2 ?

A

This was meant to be an illustrative story instead of literal account - Metaphorical.

No punctation was recorded when the Bible was being written, so Jesus could have said to the criminal that instead of going to Heaven today , he is saying that that is what he is telling him TODAY

Q

how will you counterargue the counterargument in para 2 essay 2 ?

A

Just because it is a metaphor doesn’t mean it isn’t showing humans what actually happens. Jesus could be using a metaphorical story just like he did with other parables to show people what will occur when we die, this was very common in his teaching.

In many Christian Prayers, the dead are already in Heaven.

-RAHNER- purgatory should be seen as a metaphor for spiritual state - people gain a realisation of their sins - pain = guilt of knowing -

PROTESTANTS - unnecessary - sacrifice on cross was total in overcoming sin - purgatory just a mechanism of corruption

If Hell is a symbol, then there is no need for purgatory. - HICK

38
Q

what is point in para 2 essay 4 ?

It removes the power of our free will - proves that God is omnipotent.

A god of love is also a god of justice . It is fair and just that only some of us should be saved depending on our actions and because of the fall.

what is the counterargue para 2 essay 4 ?

A

Unlimited Election - God of love calls all people to salvation and to achieve perfection; the promise of heaven in the afterlife is possible for all.
