The Prokaryotes I Flashcards
What type of replication do bacteria have?
Bidirectional
Leading strand replicated in one direction, lagging strand replicated in the other
Plasmid
Extra chromosomal DNA that cannot link up with chromosomal DNA
Episome
Extra chromosomal DNA that CAN link up with chromosomal DNA (eg. A virus integrates its genetic material into host chromosomal DNA)
Operon
Genes coding for functionally related proteins are clustered in the same area of the DNA
What size genomes do bacteria, archaea and virus’s have?
Smaller, compact genomes
What size genomes do eukaryotes have?
Larger genomes
In bacterial genomes explain the relationship between genome size and number of ORFs in the total genome
Linear relationship
As genome size increases they have more ORFs in the genome
