The Ontological argument Flashcards
Ontos
Means being.
An arg based on the being/nature of god.
Aposteriori
Arg using empirical evidence to draw a conclusion.
Apriori
Arg using reason to draw a conclusion.
Contingent
Doesn’t have to exist.
Relies on something to exist.
Necessary Existence
Has to exist.
Doesn’t reply on anything to exist.
Synthetic
An empirically verified statement.
Analytic
A statement that can be empirically verified but is verified via reason.
E.g. Triangle has 3 sides. Which by definition is true.
The Onto arg is Analytic and Apriori.
What does this mean?
Uses reason to come to a conclusion.
Conclusion: God exists is not empirically verifiable.
Onto: Step 1
Define de la.
God is a being which nothing greater can be conceived.
Anselm said even atheists have this definition, as they need it to reject him.
Step 2: Existence
Something that exists is better than something that just exists in thought.
Winning the lottery in real life is greater than winning in your head.
Step 3: Nothing greater.
If there is no being greater than god, god must exist in reality as well as thought.
Reason being that if god existed only in thought, we would be able to (as a result of the definition) think of something greater.
It’s therefore contradictory to say he doesn’t exist.
