Aug Theodicy PoE Flashcards
1
Q
Aug interprets the bible…
A
Literally. G created the world from nothing. Humans are superior to animals. Garden of Eden characterised by harmony. A + E choose to sin. (Original) Resulting in the fall, and an epistemically gap.
2
Q
Augs Hierachry of life…
A
Angles.
Man.
Animals (purely physical beings)
3
Q
The consequence of disharmony is suffering
A
In Gen 1, God punishes A+E in 3 ways: Pain at childbirth. Adam sent to toil in the fields. Both are banned from Eden. G created the world, but poor human moral choices led to the sin and suffering we see today.
4
Q
We share Adams…
A
Sin.
We’re all his descendants, and were ‘seminally present’.
We share the consequences.
5
Q
Aug on everything being good
A
Believed everything was inherently good, in proportion to being itself.
Evil must be therefore a deprivation of good.
Evil did not come from god as he created perfection.
Evil comming from elsewhere makes G justified in leaving it.
6
Q
Aug and FW
A
Aug assumes we have FW, believing its more valuable than being a robot.
If you remove freedom you also remove the good choices, not just bad.
