Telos Hume Arg Flashcards
Hume religious position?
Atheist.
Empiricist.
Wanted to show that looking at nature will tell us nothing about the Christian concept of god.
Cause and effect argument
When we look at a house, we know it has been built.
Either cos you’ve seen one being built, or been told.
But, can we say the same about the universe?
Have u witnessed the world being built?
C/A: G may have placed innate knowledge of himself in out minds.
The Comparison arguement
How can we know the world is at all perfect?
To compare a house, i look at another.
yet i cannot look at another world to know if ours is perfect.
It may be a ‘botched job’.
The first cause arguement:
If the universe is creation of a complex cosmic mind, then.
Who designed the designer.
If G can make himself, why cant the universe.
The Problem of evil:
If the cosmic designer is theistic, omnipotent, benevolent, why is the world so full of evil?
All the destruction, disease and pain suggest quite the opposite to a benevolent god.
C/A: FW is price worth paying. // Even if the watch is malfunctioning, you still see design.
Machines have many designers…
A watch has many parts, and many makers, those who assemble, create and fabricate.
Does the world therefore have more than one?
Designer of a watch is mortal and infallible, is god the same?
C/A: Watch analogy cannot be taken too seriously as it will break down.
The Epicurean hypothesis
The universes initial state was chaos.
Which gradually became ordered.
Stability and order arnt a result of the divine, but random particles comming together through infinite time.
Time + Chance = Order
