Natural Theology Double Effect Flashcards
Double Effect definition
An action where the main intention is to do good, but which may have had a bad side effect
E.g. Staying up late working is good for work, yet tomorrow ill be useless.
Euthanasia - Intention VS Result
Intended to save someone from suffering, yet results in someone’s death.
In the double effect, what matters is…
The intention.
Micheal Jackson Example
Doctors intention was to give him the pills he wanted and asked for, result was his early death.
4 criteria to establish whose at fault for double effect
The act to be done must be good in itself or at least indifferent.
The good effect must be obtained by means of the bad effect.
The bad effect must not be intended for itself, only permitted.
There must be a proportionally grave reason for permitting the bad effect.
