Telos Paleys Arg Flashcards
Palsy claimed you can clearly distinguish…
Rocks, from those that have been designed.
Palette watch analogy
Watch has: Purpose - Telling the time.
Parts that work together to fit its purpose.
Parts arranged so it fits its purpose.
You conclude that the watch must be have a maker, who must have existed to construct it.
What does the analogy show?
Everything has a purpose.
And a designer.
Alike our universe - designed by god.
Basic Watch Argument
The watch is a machine designed for the purpose of time telling. (Effect)
The features of design, suggest an intelligent designer. (Cause)
The natural world and the universe show features of design.(Effect)
Conc:Therefore the universe must have an intelligent designer. (Cause)
The Fallacy of Composition
This describes mistakenly attributing the qualities of things within a group, to the group as a whole.
Suppose the watch had another feature…
That of producing other watches.
If this were the case you’d respect the designer much more.
Even if the watch wasn’t working properly…
Just as the world functions imperfectly.
There is enough evidence of design to deduce a watchmaker.
Conc: Anyone finding such a watch…
Would conclude that the design of the watch implies “the presence of intelligence and mind”
Natural Theology
Paley commits what in his second stage arg?
Fallacy of Composition.
If i read a book i can know things about the writer.
Similarly, i can look to nature, to know about God.
NT.
Aposteriori.
Teleological Arg
Based upon the order of the universe.
Can be called argument of design.
Telos
Teleological- Any arg cast in terms of the end (telos) or purpose of something.
PRO
Purpose.
Regularity.
Order.
Paley looks at the PRO of the universe to show…
PRO shows design.
Which points to a designer.
Aqs example of the arrow
The arrow of a bow has no purpose.
It is the archer that has purpose for it.
Like G and the universe.
