Hicks PoE Theodicy Flashcards
Hicks reason for the epistemically gap?
Allows us to comes you ours own rational conclusions on God.
W/o pain our world would be…
a meaningless, empty haze.
With humans drifting aimlessly, not suffering, but not thinking or caring.
Analogy of the cricketer w/o pain.
A Cricket game where the bowler always gets a wicket and the Bateman always hits a 6 is impossible.
We cannot always all win, or not suffer.
A world where god constantly intervened would be…
A world w no freedom.
No one could grow into Gs likeness.
Our purpose?
Develop into Gs likeness.
A world where we can develop into Gods likeness…
Would be a world that suits out purpose very well.
Our purpose being too…
Hicks theodicy is a…
Soul-making theodicy.
Hick believed in…
Universal salvation.
Unlike Iraneaus.
A world where my actions cant be evil…
Would be a world of constant intervening.
Nature would have no regularity.
No science, as it relies on regularity.
No explanation for anything.
Hell as purgatory.
Hick believed in universal salvation.
He therefore takes the catholic view, that hell is purgatorial.
It is a place to go for further cleansing, for those not worthy of gods presence.
Further opportunity for soul-making.
