Synderesis
Used by Aquinas, meaning to ‘Do good, and avoid Evil’
Id
The instinctive part of the mind that has impulses to seek satisfaction and pleasure.
Super-ego
Part of the mind that contradicts the Id.
Using internalised ideals from parents & society to make the ego behave morally.
Ego
This describes the mediation between the id and the super-ego.
Conscientia
Used by Aq to describe the process whereby a persons reason makes moral judgement.
Vincible Ignorance
How Aq describes a lack of knowledge for which a persons responsible & can be blamed.
Invincible Ignorance
How Aq describes a lack of knowledge for which a person is not responsible & cannot be blamed.
For Aq, all men will the good, thru Synderesis and the Primary Precepts.
.*. Why do some ppl still reason wrong?
According to Aq,
1) Ignorance
2) Desires/Passions/Emotions - which all cloud reason.
Aquinas’ Aim for a balanced life.
Avoiding the two vices, being?
Excess and Deficiency.
Similar to Ari’s aim for balance, being the golden mean.
For Aq, “Prudence entails not only the consideration….
of the reason but also the application to action.”
Invincible
Things we could not have known, not our fault, not guilty.
Forgivable Innocence.
Vincible
We should have known.
You are responsible/guilty.
