The elbow joint (dave's notes) Flashcards
What are the components of the elbow joint?
Humeroradial and humero-ulnar
Describe the humeroradial component of the elbow joint
Synovial hinge joint between the capitulum of humerus and the radial head
The cylindrical head of radius is concave to fit the capitellum.
Describe the numero-ulnar component of the elbow joint
Synovial hinge joint between trochlear of jumpers and ulnar trochlear notch
The upper end of the ulna shows a deep trochlear notch. The engineering of the joint results in a carrying angle.
What does the elbow joint communicate with?
The proximal radioulnar joint
What are the attachments of the elbow joint capsule?
Attaches to the humerus at the margins of the lower rounded ends
Distally attached to the trochlear notch of the ulna and the annular ligament
Not attached to the radius
What ligament prevents herniation of the elbow joint capsule?
The quadrate ligament
What ligament of the elbow joint is triangular?
The ulnar collateral (medial ) ligament
What are the components of the ulnar collateral ligament?
Anterior band, posterior band, and middle band.
What does the anterior band of the ulna collateral ligament connect? What is notable about this section?
This is the strongest part of the ulnar collateral ligament.
Passes from medial epicondyle of the humerus
What does the posterior band of the ulnar collateral ligament ??arise from
The medial border of the olecranon
What is the role of the medial band of the ulnar collateral ligament?
Connects the anterior and posterior bands, and lodges the ulna nerve
List the ligaments of the elbow joint
Ulnar collateral ligament (medial)
Radial collateral ligament
Annular ligament
What are the attachments of the radial collateral ligament?
This is a single flattened band from below the ???CEO to the annular ligament
What are the attachments of the annular ligament?
Attached to the radial notch margins of the ulna, and slings around the head and neck of the radius.
What is the nerve supply to the elbow joint?
Musculocutaneous, median, ulnar and radial nerves
