Digital nerves, carpal tunnel syndrome, long flexor tendons (dave's notes) Flashcards
Where are the digital nerves found?
Immediately deep to the superficial palmar arch are the common palmar digital nerves to the proper palmar digital nerves ( these become superficial)
What do the palmar digital nerves supply?
The fingertip pads and nail beds
What fingers does the ulnar nerve supply? Via what branches?
The 3rd and 4th (little) fingers. Via the superficial branch of the ulnar nerve which divides into medial and lateral branches
What does the medial branch of the superficial branch of the ulnar nerve supply?
The ulnar side of the little finger
What does the lateral branch of the superficial branch of the ulnar nerve supply?
The cleft between the 3rd and 4th fingers, and the adjacent sides of the ring and little fingers
How does the median nerve enter the palm?
Under the flexor retinaculum
What does the median branch divide into in the palm of the hand?
A medial, a lateral, and a muscular branch
What does the medial branch of the median nerve supply?
It divides into two and supplies palmar skin
What does the lateral branch of the median nerve supply?
Palmar skin, the radial side of the index finger, the thumb and first lumbrical
What does the muscular branch of the median nerve supply? By what other name is this branch known? What is its course?
Recurrent branch of the median.
Curls upwards around the distal border of the flexor retinaculum to supply the thenar muscles.
What is the main symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome?
Compression of the median nerve leading to wasting of the thenar muscles and anaesthesia over the radial 3 1/2 digits.
Is there anaesthesia of the thenar eminence in carpal tunnel syndrome? Why?
No, because this is usually supplied by the palmar branch which passes superficially
From what do the long flexor tendons arise?
FDS and FDP
What overlies the tendons of FDP?
The tendons of FDS
What does FDP give rise to?
The lumbricals
