The Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Cranial Nerves
Carry sensory or motor neural signals or both
Cranial Nevers
I) Olfactory - sensory
II) Optic - sensory
III) Oculomotor - motor
IV) Trochlear - motor
V) Trigeminal - both
VI) Abducens - motor
VII) Facial - both
VIII) Vestibulocochlear - sensory
IX) Glossopharyngeal - both
X) Vagus - both
XI) Spinal accessory - motor
XII) Hypoglossal - motor
Sensory nerves: Cranial Nerves I, II, VII
Olfactory, optic, and vestibulocochlear nerves
- carry only sensory info to brain
Olfactory Epithelium
Region of the superior nasal cavities that are sensitive to airborne chemicals
Olfactory Nerves
Convey signals to the brain of bad chemical smells and associated with 3 structures
- series of small nerves that pass from the olfactory epithelium in the nasal cavities to the olfactory bulbs in the cranial cavity
-from the olfactory bulbs, olfactory tracts carry the signals to the cerebrum and signals arrive at the olfactory cortex of the temporal lobe
Optic Nerves
Carry infromation from retina of the eye to the brain and the 2 nerves meet in front of the hypothalamus at a cross shaped junction: optic chiasm and the neurons continue pas chiasm as optic tracts
Vestibulocochlear Nerves
Carry sensory information form the vestibule and the cochlea of the inner ear
- equilibrium
Nerves to the Extraocular Muscles (III, IV, VI)
Oculomotor, trochlear, abduces nerves - 3 motor nerves that innervate the muscles that move the eye, the extraocular muscles
Mixed Nerves: V, VII, IX, X
Trigeminal Nerve: Supplies motor innervation to the chewing muscles and carries sensory from the face, oral cavities, and nasal cavities - sensory innervation to the face
Facial Nerve: provides motor neurons to the facial expression muscles and sensory neurons from taste buds - innervates superficial muscles of the face
Glossopharyngeal nerve: carries motor neurons to the muscles of the pharynx - swallowing and taste buds
Vagus Nerve: Sensory and motor innervation to many of the body’s internal organs from the neck to the abdomen - not contained head and neck
Nerves to the Neck and Tongue: XI, XII
Spinal Accessory Nerve: motor stimulation to the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles of the neck - overlap all other skeletal muscles in the neck
Hypoglossal Nerve: motor nerve to the tongue and innervates the muscles of the tongue that change the tongues shape and those that move the tongues around in the oral cavity
